Houston accidents this week...

Train-Pedestrian Fatality at14700 South Main

April 16, 2008 - Houston police are investigating a fatal train accident in the 14700 block of South Main about 10:25 p.m. on Wednesday (Apr. 15).

The male victim, in his 50s, suffered multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Arnold and Officer J. Gaona reported:

According to witnesses, the victim had been drinking with a male friend and female acquaintance at a nearby Valero convenience store. The group then left the Valero on foot and walked north on Fondren past the Main Street underpass. As the group approached the train tracks they saw a train heading towards them. The victim stated he was in a hurry and went around the railroad crossing arms, which were activated with lights and alarms. He was then struck by the train and dragged several hundred feet before coming to a stop in the grass near the tracks.

Union Pacific Railroad is also investigating this incident and the investigation is continuing.

Fatal Traffic Accident at 15400 Katy Freeway Service Road

April 14, 2008 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 15400 block of the Katy Freeway (Interstate Highway 10 West) service road about 8:50 p.m. on Monday (Apr. 13).

The male victim, 29, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant N. A. Perry and Officer P. Tran reported:

According to witnesses, the driver of a grey pickup truck, unknown make or model, was traveling westbound on the Katy Freeway and then exited at Park Ten to the service road. The truck then crossed over the double white lines and continued changed lanes to the right at a high rate of speed. Witnesses stated the victim, who was operating a Kawasaki motorcycle westbound on the service road, kept moving to the right to avoid the truck. The truck then struck the motorcycle, turned right onto Memorial Brook and continued without stopping. The motorcycle struck a curb at the median and the victim was ejected.

The investigation is continuing.

Fatal Traffic Accident at 7200 Southwest Freeway on Feeder Road

April 13, 2008 - Houston police are investigating an accident at Westheimer and Dunlavy about 10:45 a.m. on Monday (Mar. 30).

On Monday, March 30, the victim, Leigh Boone, of Houston was injured when a Houston Fire Department truck rolled and struck her bicycle. She was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition. On Saturday (Apr. 11) she succumbed to her injuries at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Senior Police Officer D. Schlicter reported:

Houston Fire Department Engine #7 and Houston Fire Department Ladder #16 collided at the intersection of Westheimer and Dunlavy while responding to an emergency call. Upon impact ladder truck #16 rolled and struck a bicyclist.

Fatal Traffic Accident at 6700 Airline Drive

April 8, 2008 - Houston police are investigating a fatal traffic accident in the 6700 block of Airline Drive about 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday (Apr. 7).

The victim, a 35-week-old fetus, was pronounced dead at Houston Northwest Medical Center.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant L. Lefler and Officer D. S. Blades reported:

A gold Chevrolet Impala was waiting in the southbound turning lane on Airline when it was struck by a Ford van traveling northbound on Airline. The male driver of the Ford then fled the scene in his vehicle without providing assistance. The driver of the Impala, who was 35 weeks pregnant, was transported to the hospital where it was later discovered her unborn child had died.

The investigation is continuing.
