Auto accidents this week in Houston

Baytown Toddler killed in Sunday auto accident

A four-year-old Baytown boy died Sunday evening after he was struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street, police said.

An accident-reconstruction team is investigating the auto/pedestrian accident, which occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m., according to Lt. Eric Freed.

Nathan Elorza was apparently playing with other children in a vacant lot in the 700 block of Schilling Street when a relative called to him from the opposite side of Schilling Street.

The child stepped into the street and directly into the path of the truck, which was heading west on Schilling.

“There were a couple of vehicles parked on her side of the street so she (the relative) probably couldn’t see that truck coming,” said Freed.

Young Elorza was taken to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Freed said.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 19-year-old Baytown resident and student at Lee College, was noticeably shaken, according to officers at the accident scene, who said they saw no evidence of alcohol either in his demeanor or in his vehicle. Nevertheless, police took the teen to a hospital so blood could be drawn and tests run to check for anything that could have affected his driving ability. The accident investigation team will look for any factors that could have attributed to the accident, such as vehicle speed and even if the setting sun could have caused some visual impairment to the westbound driver, Freed said.
