Suspected drunken driver charged in hit-run
Boy killed while walking along a road in New Caney
A suspected drunken driver was arrested after authorities say he fatally struck a 13-year-old boy walking down a road in New Caney Saturday morning.
Javier I. Correa, 28, was driving a 1998 Dodge Dakota west on FM 1485 near Kidd Cemetery Road around 9:45 a.m. when he drove onto the paved shoulder of the road where two boys were walking, said Department of Public Safety state trooper Justin Lopez.
The truck then struck 13-year-old Kendrick Owens, throwing the boy over a guard rail, Lopez said.
Kendrick was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital-The Texas Medical Center, where he later died.
Correa fled the scene, authorities say, but a wrecker driver who witnessed the hit-and-run followed him to his home and alerted authorities of the incident.
“Sobriety tests were performed, and he performed poorly on them,” Lopez said.
Correa was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, as well as failure to stop and render aid.
