Collision on highway takes one life

A 32-year-old man died on a Baytown highway early Tuesday after a witness told police they saw him driving erratically.

Police involvement began when a call came in from that witness, who was following an SUV being driven in an erratic manner northbound on Highway 146 from the Fred Hartmann Bridge, according to Baytown Police Capt. Mike Holden. The witness told police that the driver appeared to be impaired and had hit the concrete barriers on the side of the roadway several times.

A Baytown patrol officer caught up to them just after the vehicles passed over North Main Street. He passed the witness’ vehicle and then fell in behind the suspect vehicle, turned on his overhead lights and signaled for the driver of the SUV to stop, Holden said.

Instead, the officer saw a shower of sparks and witnessed a tragic accident as he saw the SUV hit something.

That something turned out to be a man on a motorcycle.

The SUV driver was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 42-year-old driver of the motorcycle was rushed to Houston’s Hermann Hospital via Life Flight helicopter.

“We think the SUV was following the motorcycle,” said Holden, who said he believes the victims probably worked together.

“They were both from out-of-state and both here doing some kind of tree-cutting work,” he explained.

Holden said that at last word, the motorcyclist was in Hermann’s ICU unit.

The accident is under investigation.
